There is Something About Forgetting - A Poem

A Poem - There is Something About ForgettingThat feeling you get when looking back at an old picture of you with your baby many years later. A motherhood poem:There is something about forgettingThe smooth, small head cupped beneath the small of my shoulderThe photo shows it all:The tenderness, the contentment.Yet this no longer exists in my memory.I shake the cobwebs but all I can seeIs the rangy length of a boy’s legs beneath the sheetsAs my hand reaches further and further to tickle his toes each night.Sometimes I wonder if I would even recognize the face of that baby as my ownIf I saw him today out of context.Time and memory are slippery for me.There is almost only sweetness in the memories,But when I look back and read my words from this time,There is also exhaustion and doubt and fear.I would love to meet that baby and the young woman I once was again someday.I will embrace them both.
